Project Overview

In early 2025, ThermoFisher Scientific completed the installation of three Ratio EV io8 dual charging units at their Hemel Hempstead facility. This project demonstrates how thoughtful planning and selecting the right equipment can create an efficient, expandable EV charging solution that addresses both immediate needs and future requirements.

The Client

ThermoFisher Scientific is a global leader in scientific research and pharmaceutical testing. Their Hemel Hempstead site serves as a key facility where critical research and testing of pharmaceutical products takes place, requiring uninterrupted power and reliable infrastructure.

The Challenge

When ThermoFisher began exploring EV charging options, they faced several key considerations:

  • Need for immediate charging capability with built-in expansion potential
  • Critical power management requirements due to sensitive laboratory equipment
  • Ensuring charging access was limited to staff and authorised visitors only
  • Maintaining site aesthetics and functionality

The Solution

Working with London EV Chargers, ThermoFisher selected the Ratio EV io8 charging system. The installation includes:

  • Three io8 dual charging units (providing six charging sockets)
  • Infrastructure for an additional six charging sockets for future expansion
  • Dynamic load management system to protect critical site power needs
  • QR code-based access control for visitors
  • App-based access for regular users
  • Integration with the Wevo back-office management system

The io8’s features proved ideal for the site, offering elegant design with built-in illumination alongside practical functionality. The lighting feature enhances visibility in the car park while maintaining an attractive aesthetic. London EV Chargers also installed the necessary infrastructure for phase two of the project, which will see an additional six charging sockets added in the future.

The Installation Process

London EV Chargers thorough approach ensured smooth project delivery:

1. Initial Assessment

  • Two detailed site surveys
  • Power requirement analysis
  • Load management planning to protect sensitive laboratory equipment

2. Comprehensive Planning

  • Ground scanning for underground utilities
  • Detailed project timeline development
  • Material procurement coordination

3. Implementation

  • Site preparation and safety setup
  • Civil works, including trenching and cable installation
  • Base installation using Ratio’s flatpack system
  • Electrical connections and load management integration
  • Commissioning and testing

London EV Chargers meticulous planning paid off, with the entire installation being completed in just 11 working days. Despite the typical challenges of British weather causing some rain delays, the project proceeded smoothly without technical complications.

Results & Benefits

The installation has delivered multiple advantages for ThermoFisher Scientific:

Business Benefits

  • Enhanced staff productivity by eliminating charging-related absences
  • Improved visitor experience with on-site charging availability
  • Future-ready infrastructure that can grow with demand
  • Efficient power management protecting critical laboratory operations

Practical Benefits

  • Convenient QR code system for visitors
  • App-based access for regular users
  • Attractive charging points with integrated lighting
  • Simple flat-rate charging system at 35p/kWh to cover costs with the availability to offer multi-charging system for the future

Looking Forward

The ThermoFisher installation demonstrates the value of careful planning and selecting the right products for specific site requirements. Already seeing daily usage from at least three vehicles, the company is well-positioned to expand their charging capability as EV adoption continues to grow among its staff and visitors.

“The io8 chargers were very well received by ThermoFisher. Everyone who saw them commented on how nice they look, particularly appreciating the integrated lighting feature that illuminates the parking area.”
